Chapter Eight
Rosie
I'm in the library, my favourite, go-to place, just reading my notes on history to see if I've missed anything in my homework. Itâs Thursday lunch. Riley has a gym competition so has gone to another school with the gym team. Her friendsâthe ones that I usually hang withâare on it, too, so I'm friendless today. I thought about going to Liam at the workshop, knowing he'll probably be there, but that's his downtime, where he releases his stress. So, I decide to leave him be and hang out in the library. Weâre spending so much time together. People are starting to comment that weâre inseparable, and I'm getting way too comfortable with it. What am I going to do when this is all over? I need to spend some time on my own. I can't stop thinking about that kiss. I felt surrounded by him, protected. It was the most fantastic thing I've ever felt, and I felt it in every nerve ending of my body. The way his mouth felt against mine, the taste of him. God, I could lose myself in this guy if I'm not careful.
I get up to go down one of the aisles, looking for another book on the American civil war just to make my notes a little beefier. That's when I hear them.
"Yeah, and Kelsie told me that he's taking her to Connor's again on Saturday night."
"Are you serious?"
"So I've heard."
"This is so unlike Liam. I don't get it."
I freeze when I hear Liam's name. They don't know I'm here. I don't recognise the voices.
"What does he see in her anyway? She's a beast."
My heart sinks. I really hate mean girls.
"I know, right? There's no way he can be taking her because he likes her. He must feel sorry for her or something."
I try to get a sneaky look at who's talking. One is Chelsea, the girl he was kissing the first Saturday before all this started. I don't know who the other one is.
"Well, donât forget he made out with you when he was with her, so he canât be that into her."
"I know, and she interrupted, the cow. He said that he was just helping her settle into Arrowsmith. Why is he the good Samaritan all of a sudden? And, did you hear what he did to Mark when he said something about her?" Chelsea asks.
I go cold. What is she talking about?
âYeah, apparently he pinned him up against the wall when he said something. That was right at the beginning, too.â
I donât know anything about this. He didnât mention anything to me. I try and cast my mind back to think when it could have been, but I'm drawing a blank. He's been defending me?
âMarkâs his teammate, too. There must be something in it for him. Theyâve been spending a lot of time together."
"Yeah. Maybe he actually likes her?" Chelsea sounds sad.
âAre you crazy? Why would he be into her when he could have you. There is an explanation.
